Iron Butterfly “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”

This is one of those records, the title song anyway, that is always just going to be way too familiar to ever appreciate the way one might have when it came out– though, when you actually listen to it, and it’s not just in your mind, it  does sound a little fresh. I can never really enjoy it, though, because the lyrics drift between “can’t understand them” and lame, and it really kind of gets worse as it goes along. It’s sounding pretty good when he says something that sounds like, “Don’t you know I harvest the truth.” What?! But then, gets really lame when he says, “Oh, won’t you come with me, and walk this land– pleeeeeeese take my hand.” Yikes!

I have a pretty clean copy of this record, but whenever you see it in thrift stores and at garage sales, it’s ALWAYS water damaged for some reason.  Moldy. Cat piss. Bong water. Side Two pretty much sucks dead wanna be hippie beads, throughout.

Well, you’ve pretty much got this one down pat. The lyrics are dumb (Your version of the one line is pretty great, but it’s actually “Don’t you know that I’ll always love you,” I’m pretty sure) and the singing is in that totally typical big over-the-top grandiose pretentious style that was so popular in late-60s ‘heavy’ bands like Iron Butterfly. But man, the music on In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida is *great*.. That big main riff, the great organ playing, the groove that just does not stop throughout the whole song (well, except ironically during the drum solo..) — it’s a really powerful song, I think. And somehow it still really holds up, if you can be generous enough to take the singing and lyrics with a grain of salt.

But yeah, side two? Dont’ bother.

Actually, I happened to see Iron Butterfly play an outdoor festival in Toledo, Ohio about ten years ago, in like the mid-90s sometime, all 3 original members, and – yow, they were actually *really* really good. Even the non-IAGDV songs were good, although I dont’ remember them at all now – and IAGDV itself was really powerful and moving and – just everything a song like that *should* be in a live setting. The bass player was really great too, I remember. But yeah, this is like a one-song concept album or something.

I knew “harvest the truth” was too good to be true! But once you get a line like that in your mind– it starts to make sense. I started to think of Blue Oyster Cult’s “Harvester of Eyes” and then that guy making the eyes in BLADERUNNER, and it just kind of enters the realm of mythology.

Jimi Hendrix actually DID say “Scuse me while I kiss THIS GUY,” though.

Yeah, that was in the song, “There’s A Bathroom On The Right” that CCR covered.
